Masked Personalities

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person.  Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.  ~Oscar Wilde

You know when people say, “Just be yourself.” Well, is being yourself really sexy? Or is it quite possible that putting on an “act” is sexy as well? A facade or masked character is what you could call it. Something more mysterious… The thought brushed my mind as I was driving yesterday. I know that this question has infinite answers because it’s all about perspective and insight and what it exactly relates to. Is it quite possible that people are just drawn to the more mysterious? Personally, I’ve always been intrigued by the most complicated people because I have a challenge to behold. That’s just my situation. However, being yourself comes with barriers or, rather, restrictions for one’s self. That person must not wear his or her heart on the sleeve. It can be dangerous and let others know his or her weaknesses that can therefore be exploited. This will just damage a person. It’s common sense to have these barriers. Say, when you’re at a costume party and see someone across the room. His body language is suggestive and he’s looking at you. Well, the person is looking at you and you probably want to know who’s behind the mask (or not…). The riskiness of discovering someone else is exhilarating and adventurous. Somehow, in our modern society, people who appear to be something else that they really aren’t have an appeal about them. However, this is not for everyone. On the contrary of a facade, being yourself really does have its benefits. It leaves people feeling more comfortable with themselves and others around them. It’s still acting but not as much. (Our lives are filled with acting). Some people have a preference for people who don’t remain mysterious and are rather easy to figure out. These people are comfortable with themselves and aren’t afraid to show others. They don’t put on a masked character. There isn’t as much of a challenge with the easily figured people that is appealing for others. The mystery is lacking…

In the end, it’s all about taste. Some of us like the mystery and some of us don’t. But, some of us don’t even think about it.

Casually,
Taylor
